New version of the Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 3)

Effective January 1, 2025, Romania has implemented a revised version of the Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NACE), known as NACE Rev. 3. This update aims to align the classification system with current economic and technological developments, ensuring that new activities and products are accurately represented.

Key Changes in NACE Rev. 3:

  • Detailed Classifications: Certain NACE codes have been subdivided to provide more specific classifications. For example, the previous code for “Retail trade intermediaries in non-specialized stores” has been split into multiple codes based on the type of commerce conducted, such as:
    • NACE 4711 – Non-specialized retail trade with a predominance of food, beverages, and tobacco
    • NACE 4722 – Retail trade of meat and meat products
    • NACE 4740 – Retail trade of IT and telecom equipment
    • NACE 4751 – Retail trade of textiles
    • NACE 4754 – Retail trade of household appliances
    • NACE 4773 – Retail trade of pharmaceutical products
    • NACE 4775 – Retail trade of cosmetic and perfumery products
    • NACE 4777 – Retail trade of watches and jewelry
    • NACE 4782 – Retail trade of vehicle parts and accessories
    • NACE 4783 – Retail trade of motorcycles and accessories
  • Aggregated Classifications: Some codes have been merged to streamline the classification system. For instance, in the IT sector, previous codes for “IT consultancy activities” and “Management and operation of computer resources” have been combined into a single code:
    • NACE 6220 – IT consultancy and computer resource management activities
  • Reclassified Codes: Certain activities have been reassigned new codes to better reflect their nature. For example, “Real estate development (promotion)” has been reclassified from:
    • NACE 4110 to NACE 6812

Implications for Romanian Companies:

All Romanian companies are required to update their object of activity to comply with NACE Rev. 3. This involves reviewing current activities, identifying appropriate new codes, and updating official documents such as the articles of association. The updated documents must then be submitted to the Trade Register. This process is essential for maintaining compliance with current regulations and accurately reflecting the company’s operations.

Steps for Compliance:

  1. Internal Assessment: Conduct a thorough review of the company’s current activities and map them to the new NACE codes.
  2. Documentation Update: Revise the company’s articles of association and other relevant documents to reflect the new codes.
  3. Submission to Trade Register: File the updated documents with the Trade Register.

By adhering to these steps, Romanian companies can effectively navigate the transition to NACE Rev. 3, ensuring their activities are accurately classified and compliant with the latest regulatory standards.
